LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) A call for a vote of confidence in UK Prime Minister Theresa May by her Conservative party has thrown Brexit into further chaos, with "game of thrones" style intrigue rather than sound governance taking priority, Neil McEvoy, an independent member of the National Assembly for Wales, told Sputnik.

"I don't think with the Conservative party the issue has ever been about Brexit; it's about personal ambition and which individual wants to be Prime Minister," McEvoy said.

Prime minister May has vowed to fight on following Wednesday's shock result as dissident lawmakers successfully triggered a challenge to her leadership. She warned that the process of leaving Europe could now be further jeopardized, with a vote of confidence at such a critical point potentially delaying the full implementation of Article 50.

"Brexit is a back story for them, really. But for us, as in people in the real world, Brexit is a major thing, the major thing. If there's no agreement [with EU] then what's going to happen to the money that comes from Europe ... There are so many questions but you have this bunch of very unfunny comedians in London playing a game of thrones," McEvoy said.

The possibility of a divided Conservative party effectively losing control of the House of Commons has also prompted some to consider the possibility of either a general election or a second referendum on membership of the European Union.

"There's a lot of governance issues in Wales that are going untackled. That and there'll be chaos with Brexit now ... They've had two years to sort themselves out and here we are now. It's a crazy situation," McEvoy went on to say.

The vote of no confidence is expected on Wednesday evening. If May survives it she will be safe from further challenges for a year, but if it is passed a leadership contest will begin, opening up the possibility for a no-deal Brexit on March 29, 2019.
