French Gov't May Use Strasbourg Attack to Put Lid on Yellow Vest Riots - Belgian Lawmaker

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner could use the shooting attack in Strasbourg in an effort to prevent new violence at the "Yellow Vests" protests, Aldo Carcaci, a Belgian parliament member from the People's Party (PP), told Sputnik on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner could use the shooting attack in Strasbourg in an effort to prevent new violence at the "Yellow Vests" protests, Aldo Carcaci, a Belgian parliament member from the People's Party (PP), told Sputnik on Wednesday.

As many as two people were killed and a third person was brain-dead after a gunman opened fire close to Strasbourg's Christmas market on Tuesday, also injuring 12 other people, six out of them gravely. The shooter is still on the run.

"The Minister of Interior of France Castaner will probably take advantage of this terrorist attack to try to put a lid on the revolt of the 'yellow vests,' in order to avoid any more violence on the streets," Carcaci said.

The lawmaker suggested that the Strasbourg attack suspect could already be in the Belgian municipality of Molenbeek, where he said many Islamists had taken refuge.

"It is particularly annoying to read the incredible 'precautions' taken by the French government to avoid saying that this man is a terrorist. They say he might have acted 'in despair.' It is the same officials who will endlessly talk about 'fake news,' but their omissions are a fake news themselves," Carcaci noted.

France has seen a wave of mass protests since mid-November, when the so-called yellow vest protesters took to the streets to rally against the fuel tax hikes. The "yellow vest" rallies in France have been marked by violent clashes between the police and protesters, some of whom were torching cars and looting shops in Paris.
