Russian, Azerbaijani General Staff Chiefs Discussed Karabakh -Azerbaijani Defense Ministry

Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, and his Azerbaijani counterpart Col. Gen. Najmaddin Sadigov have discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement and the prospects for defense cooperation between the two countries during their meeting in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, the press service of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told Sputnik on Wednesday.

BAKU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, and his Azerbaijani counterpart Col. Gen. Najmaddin Sadigov have discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement and the prospects for defense cooperation between the two countries during their meeting in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, the press service of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"Having touched upon the military and political situation and the regional security, Col. Gen. Sadigov mentioned that the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was the main threat to the regional security. The chief of the General Staff emphasized the importance of reaching a settlement to the conflict that would be based on international law norms and principles," the press service said.

Gerasimov pointed out that the Russian-Azerbaijani relations were rooted in history, also praising Azerbaijan as an important strategic partner. He emphasized the importance of extending bilateral ties, military and defense cooperation, and also of holding high-level meetings of the two countries' military officials.

"Then the sides have discussed the current state of military and defense cooperation, and of the prospects for developing military education ties. They have also exchanged opinions on matters of mutual interest," the press service added.
