Russian President Vladimir Putin has put emphasis on the legal aspect of the case of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, jailed in Russia for plotting terrorist attacks, during his meeting with the members of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin has put emphasis on the legal aspect of the case of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, jailed in Russia for plotting terrorist attacks, during his meeting with the members of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

The meeting was held on Tuesday. As Igor Borisov, a member of the council, told Sputnik, a suggestion to release Sentsov had been voiced at the meeting. Putin reportedly emphasized the necessity to act within legal framework.

"He was drawing attention to the legal aspect of the case. As for Sentsov, he has repeatedly voiced his position in public," Peskov told reporters, when asked to comment on Putin's reaction to the suggestion to release Sentsov.

In 2014, Sentsov was arrested in Simferopol, and in 2015 a Russian court sentenced him for 20 years in prison for setting up a terrorist cell Right Sector (banned in Russia) and plotting terrorist acts in the Crimean cities of Yalta, Sevastopol, and Simferopol. The Ukrainian filmmaker has denied his guilt.

In early October, Sentsov ended his months-long hunger strike.
