Katowice Climate Change Negotiations Must Take Greater Stock of Finance - UNFCCC Head

The talks on the rule book for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, ongoing in Poland's Katowice, should have a greater focus on finance, Patricia Espinosa, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said Tuesday.

KATOWICE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The talks on the rule book for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, ongoing in Poland's Katowice, should have a greater focus on finance, Patricia Espinosa, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said Tuesday.

"We must see greater movement on finance throughout the spectrum of these negotiations. This includes a mobilization of funding that will provide greater support and predictability for those suffering from the impacts of climate change," Espinosa said at the resumed high level segment at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the convention Change (COP24).

The talks that began on December 3 and are set to last through Friday have proven difficult as participants differed on their view of guidelines for the implementation of the Paris agreement.

"Many political divisions remain, many issues still must be overcome, but I believe that it is within our grasp to finish the job," Espinosa said.

The Paris climate deal, which went into force in 2016, aims to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). It has been ratified by 184 of the 197 parties to the accord.
