Ex-US NGO Chief Admits Hiding Azerbaijan Govt. Funding of Congress Trip - Justice Dept.

The former president of a Texas-based non-governmental organization has pleaded guilty for trying to hide the fact that a 2013 Congressional trip to Azerbaijan was funded by the country's government, the Department of Justice said on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The former president of a Texas-based non-governmental organization has pleaded guilty for trying to hide the fact that a 2013 Congressional trip to Azerbaijan was funded by the country's government, the Department of Justice said on Monday.

"Kemal Oksuz, aka 'Kevin Oksuz,' 49, and previously a resident of Arlington, Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of devising a scheme to falsify, conceal and cover up material facts from the US House of Representatives Committee on Ethics," the Justice Department said in a press release.

Oksuz will be sentenced on February 11, 2019 before US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, DC the Justice Department said.

"Oksuz admitted to ... orchestrating a scheme to funnel money to fund the trip from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), the wholly state-owned national oil and gas company of Azerbaijan, and then concealed the true source of funding," the release said.

Oksuz was recently extradited from Armenia where he was detained by authorities, following a warrant issued for his arrest, the Justice Department added.
