Damascus Urges UNESCO to Condemn Illegal Archaeological Excavations Done by Other States

The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Monday urged UNESCO to condemn illegal archaeological excavations carried out by the United States, France, Turkey and groups loyal to them in the country.

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Monday urged UNESCO to condemn illegal archaeological excavations carried out by the United States, France, Turkey and groups loyal to them in the country.

"The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemns illegal archaeological excavations carried out by US, French, Turkish troops and their agents in Manbij, Afrin, Idlib, Al Hasakah, Raqqa and other occupied areas. Our data points to intensified excavations and looting of Syrian cultural heritage ... The Syrian Foreign Ministry calls on UNESCO to condemn these blatant violations, disclose the parties and instruments being behind this," the ministry said on its Facebook page.

According to the ministry, such excavations are yet another war crime aimed at depriving Syrians of their history.

In June, Syrian Director of Antiquities and Museums Mahmoud Hammoud said that the Department of Antiquities and Museums was completing the full list of historical values moved out of the country and would submit it to the UNESCO and Interpol in order to return them as soon as possible.

During the seven-year-long war terrorists destroyed a lot of historical monuments in Syria and organized traffic of antiquities to finance their activities.
