Rossiya Segodnya Information Agency Launches AR Project at Museum of Russian Impressionism

Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency has launched its first augmented reality (AR) project at the Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency has launched its first augmented reality (AR) project at the Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow.

The new project was presented on Sunday. With the help of the РИА.Lab mobile app, the guests have the opportunity to learn about synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon in which people experience feelings from two of their five senses at the same time. Such people, for instance, can experience colors as a smell or a sound.

"Modern journalism is changing and mastering new technologies. With the help of VR and AR tools, we are overcoming the superficial perception of the text. We are also looking for new approaches to reach out to a modern man, spoiled by clip culture," Dmitry Kiselev, the director general of Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency, said at the presentation.

The phenomenon of synesthesia has been proved, but has still been little studied. Some synesthetes see words and numbers as colors, others are able to discern the color of a person's mood, others know the taste of each color, and some see time as a circle or a curve.

According to certain estimates, roughly 4 percent of the population are synesthetes, with the share increasing among people of creative professions. It is known that Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov, Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Serbian-US inventor Nikola Tesla and US Jazz composer Duke Ellington were synesthetes.

The special mobile app will allow guests of the museum to hear how paintings sound and see their own voices as a mix of colors.

The app is available for both iOS and Android users in App Store and Google Play. Moreover, the agency published several episodes of a podcast with interviews of synesthetes and researchers at https://ria.ru/istorii_doc/.

The AR project was developed with the support of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, the Russian Synaesthesia Community, the International Association of Synaesthetes, as well as science and arts workers. samsung Electronics is the technological partner of the project. Rossiya Segodnya is an information partner of the Museum of Russian Impressionism.
