EU Earmarks $5.7Mln in Food Assistance to Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh - Statement

The European Union has allocated $5.7 million in food assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the European Commission said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) The European Union has allocated $5.7 million in food assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the European Commission said on Monday.

"The European Commission has released an additional 5 million to provide life-saving food assistance to the Rohingya communities stranded in Bangladesh," the commission said in a statement.

The statement noted that the new assistance followed the 40 million Euros in humanitarian aid pledged by the bloc in May.

According to European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides, "today's additional funding is another clear sign that the EU remains committed to stand by the side of the Rohingya for as long as it takes."

Rohingyas, a Muslim minority in Myanmar, have been fleeing their homes to avoid waves of violence following the government's deployment of police and military units in response to an attack by Rohingya insurgents on security posts in Rakhine state on August 25, 2017. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 700,000 Rohingyas have left the country for neighboring Bangladesh since last August for the fear of persecution.
