Former US Secretary of State Tillerson Says Trump Wanted Him to Break Laws

Former US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in an interview broadcast on Friday that President Donald Trump repeatedly directed him to do things that would violate laws and treaties and would get frustrated when the top diplomat objected.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Former US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in an interview broadcast on Friday that President Donald Trump repeatedly directed him to do things that would violate laws and treaties and would get frustrated when the top diplomat objected.

"When the president would say, 'Here's what I want to do and here's how I want to do it,' I'd have to say to him, 'Mr. President, I understand what you want to do, but you can't do it that way. It violates the law. It violates a treaty.' You know, he got really frustrated," Tillerson said told CBS news.

The interview marked the first public remarks that Tillerson has made about his brief tenure in office since Trump announced that he was fired on March 13.

"I think part of it was obviously we are starkly different in our styles. We did not have a common value system," Tillerson said, while calling the president "pretty undisciplined."

Tillerson also described the president as someone who acts on his instincts.

The former top US diplomat said he believes he was fired because Trump grew tired of his process-oriented methods.

Tillerson also said that China's growing influence and a "belligerent Russia" are the greatest foreign threats to the United States.
