Sudan, Russia to Discuss Next Week Project to Use National Currencies in Trade- Ambassador

Moscow and Khartoum intend to discuss the use of national currencies in trade next week as part of a pilot project, which can subsequently be extended to other African countries, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Nadir Babiker told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Moscow and Khartoum intend to discuss the use of national currencies in trade next week as part of a pilot project, which can subsequently be extended to other African countries, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Nadir Babiker told Sputnik.

According to the diplomat, the issue will be discussed at next week's meeting of the Russian-Sudanese Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

"It's an initiative from Russia which is a very smart idea, that you can conclude trade transactions with local currencies if you have sanctions because of use of the US Dollars, then you can use Sudanese pound and the ruble. It was used with China, with Turkey, with Japan I think. The idea is good, you have to go around sanctions, if they have been hampering the movement and the business transactions," Babiker said.

He suggested that the pilot project of using the national currencies in trade instead of the US Dollar, if agreed, could then be backed by other Russian partners in Africa.

"In a multipolar world there is not one power that dominates ... This initiative will encourage others. It can also be implemented with other African countries. We have more than fifty African countries who are very keen to deal with Russia... If we have this initiative as a pilot project, it can be enlarged an implemented with other African countries," the diplomat pointed out.
