STOCKHOLM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th December, 2018) The United Kingdom welcomes the agreement to release prisoners of war and detainees that was reached by the delegations of the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels during UN-brokered peace talks in Sweden, UK Ambassador to Yemen Michael Aron told Sputnik on Thursday, adding that the accord would set the tone for the rest of the consultations.

The peace negotiations have begun earlier on Thursday, in a castle in Rimbo, a town north of Stockholm. The signing of the agreement was announced at a press conference by UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths, who is attending the consultations.

"Obviously we are very pleased that there has been an agreement on the exchange of detainees. They have been working on that for a long time and it sets the tone for the week. We hope to see more agreements," Aron said.

The armed conflict in Yemen sparked in 2015 and saw the Houthis occupy vast territories in the northwest of the country. The war and a blockade organized by the Saudi-led coalition, which intervened in the conflict on the side of the Yemeni government, have resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the country, with local population suffering from famine and outbreaks of deceases.
