Russia's Putin, Japan's Abe To Meet On G20 Margins

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st December, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The leaders are expected to discuss the signing of a long-awaited peace treaty between the two countries, which has been stalled for decades over an island row.

At their last meeting in Singapore, Putin and Abe agreed to push ahead with the talks to resolve the dispute over the ownership of the Kuril island chain, seen by Japan as its occupied northern territory.

In Argentina, they will discuss a joint mechanism for Kuril negotiations based on the 1956 declaration by Japan and the Soviet Union, which restored their diplomatic relations.
