Argentina Hopes US, China to Take Path of Multilateralism on Trade - Deputy FM

Argentina hopes that China and the United States will take a path of multilateralism as they work to resolve their ongoing trade dispute, Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Raimondi told reporters on Thursday.

BUENOS AIRES (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th November, 2018) Argentina hopes that China and the United States will take a path of multilateralism as they work to resolve their ongoing trade dispute, Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Raimondi told reporters on Thursday.

When asked about Argentina's position on the current trade war between Washington and Beijing, Raimondi said, "It's our strong stance in favor of multilateralism."

Raimondi voiced support for multilateral institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"We believe that the world needs trade based in rules," Raimondi said. "We are in favor of defending the WTO and of having talks in multilateral forums and ... trade agreements that take into account those disciplines of multilateral trade. In our view, this is the way to overcome those differences. We hope that both the United States and China will take that path."

China and the United States became embroiled in a trade dispute after US President Donald Trump unveiled new steel and aluminum import duties in March. Tensions escalated in May when the Trump administration announced that $50 billion worth of Chinese goods would be subject to 25 percent tariffs, prompting a retaliation from Beijing. Since then, the two sides have imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on hundreds of billions of Dollars worth of goods.
