Afghanistan Can Achieve High GDP Growth Rate by 2025 if Peace Process Succeeds - Minister

Afghanistan has all chances to achieve a high economic growth rate by 2025, provided that the peace process brings fruit and is accompanied by efforts to unlock the country's economic potential, Afghan Finance Minister Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi said on Wednesday

GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th November, 2018) Afghanistan has all chances to achieve a high economic growth rate by 2025, provided that the peace process brings fruit and is accompanied by efforts to unlock the country's economic potential, Afghan Finance Minister Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi said on Wednesday.

"We need sustained and rapid and more inclusive economic growth to reverse the recent trends of increasing poverty and rising unemployment. In these next five years, we must set the country firmly on the path for development and, over time, self-reliance. Improved security and prospects for peace, robust reforms and economic growth will work together or not at all. Assuming that a peace process leads to a substantial improvement in security, and all potential growth sources are rapidly mobilized, Afghanistan could achieve high rates of economic growth, self-reliance and significant reduction in poverty by 2025," Qayoumi said during the Geneva Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan.

The two-day ministerial conference began in the Swiss city of Geneva on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the key consultations as part of the event are being held.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from political, socio-economic and security-related instability due to simmering insurgency, including that of the Taliban and the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, outlawed in Russia).
