Moscow Hands Kiev Protest Note Over Kerch Strait Incident

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it handed on Monday a protest note to Ukraine's Charge d'Affaires Ruslan Nimchinsky over the Sunday incident in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) The Russian Foreign Ministry said it handed on Monday a protest note to Ukraine's Charge d'Affaires Ruslan Nimchinsky over the Sunday incident in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

"On November 26, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Charge d'Affaires ad interim in Moscow, Ruslan Nimchinsky, to voice a strong protest in connection with the gross violation by the ships of the Ukrainian navy of the rules of peaceful passage in the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea on November 25, 2018," the ministry said in a statement.

On Sunday, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said that three ships of the Ukrainian Navy crossed the Russian sea border, entered the temporarily closed area of the Russian territorial waters, and were moving from the Black Sea toward the Kerch Strait in violation of Articles 19 and 21 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

According to the FSB, the Ukrainian vessels did not react to legal demands of the Russian coastal guard ships accompanying them and made dangerous maneuvers. They were detained after violating the Russian state border.
