WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested 42 people on Sunday for crossing the US-Mexico border, Chief patrol agent for the CBP San Diego region Rodney Scott said on Monday.

"We ended up making about 42 arrests. Only eight of those were females, and there were only a few children involved. The vast majority of those were adult males," Scott said in an interview with CNN.

Scott said a group breached sections of the border wall made of scrap metal and also assaulted some of the CBP agents.

US Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said in a statement on Monday that using tear gas on migrants near the US-Mexico border is "shameful and disgusting."

However, US Congressman Mark Meadows said the incident of people "rushing entry points" on the Southern border shows the immediate need for Congress to secure the border by giving President Donald Trump all the funds he has requested for a wall.

On Saturday, Trump said he will close the US-Mexico border checkpoints if necessary to combat illegal immigration.

Several caravans of migrants from Central America are making their way through Mexico. According to Mexican Interior Ministry, about 5,600 migrants from the poorest Central American countries Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador - reached the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali near the US border expecting to enter the United States and seek asylum. US authorities have deployed several thousand active-duty troops to the border to ensure security.
