ROME (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th November, 2018) UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Saturday that he was trying to exert all efforts until the end of his mandate to push the formation of Syria's constitutional committee forward.De Mistura said in mid-October that he would step down for personal reasons at the end of November.
"I am pushing until the last day of my assignment to use that leverage in order to get something moving in the direction of the constitutional committee. Why? Because you have heard the Russians have an interest, substantial interest [in establishment of the constitutional committee]. We all have an interest," de Mistura said at the Mediterranean Dialogues Forum in Rome.
On Monday, the UN Syria envoy expressed hope that the constitutional committee, set to draft reforms to Syria's constitution, could convene in December.
The decision to set up the Syrian constitutional committee was made at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, held in the Russian resort city of Sochi in January.
