EU Tells 16 Member States to Enforce New Anti-Terror Rules

The European Commission has given 16 member states two months to harmonize national laws with last year's EU-wide regulations on combating terrorism.

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd November, 2018) The European Commission has given 16 member states two months to harmonize national laws with last year's EU-wide regulations on combating terrorism.

"The Commission decided to send letters of formal notice to 16 Member States ... The law is a crucial element of the EU's fight against terrorism - criminalising and sanctioning terrorist-related offences," it said in a press release on Thursday.

Letters were sent to Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia.

The countries are to notify the EU's executive body that they have implemented the rules in their national law. The announcement marks this as an exceptional case and further failure to comply may lead Brussels to refer it to the top EU court.
