MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd November, 2018) South Africa is monitoring closely the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and hoping that they will be peaceful, South African Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said during a lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Thursday.

"We hope that we have peaceful elections on December 23. We have kept a keen eye on the DRC ... We are convinced that all measures have been taken to have an election in the DRC," Sisulu said.

The general elections were expected to be held in the country in late 2016, but were postponed. Incumbent President Joseph Kabila has been in power since January 2001.

The United States on Wednesday called on all DRC political actors to ensure that the election campaigns are conducted peacefully and with respect to democratic freedoms and human rights.
