Zayed Book Award longlist announced for ‘Development of Nations’ /2018-2019/

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) announced today its longlist for ‘Contribution to the Development of Nations’, counting six titles out of 173 nominations received in the category. The nominations came from across the Arab regions, mostly from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain and Morocco.

AABU DHABI, (Pakistan Point News - 22nd Nov, 2018) The Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) announced today its longlist for ‘Contribution to the Development of Nations’, counting six titles out of 173 nominations received in the category. The nominations came from across the Arab regions, mostly from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain and Morocco.

1. ‘Al Naft Bayn Erth Al Tareekh Wa Tahadeyat Al Qarn 21’ (Oil: between the legacy of History, and the challenges of the 21st century) by Saudi author Dr. Majid Abdullah Al-Muneef, published by Le Centre Culturel Arabe (2018) 2. ‘Karaheyat Al Islam’ (Islamophobia) by Jordanian writer Fahri Salih, published by Arab Scientific Publishers (2016) 3. ‘Al Deeni Wal Donyawi, Naqd Al Wasata Wal Kahtana’ (Religious and secular criticism of mediation and priesthood) by Moroccan scholar Abdelilah Belkziz, published by Al Maaref Forum (2018) 4. ‘Al Tataruf’ (Extremism) by Jordanian author Ibrahim Gharaibeh, published by Serene Publishing & Distribution (2018) 5. ‘Ghandi Wa Qadaya Al Arab Wal Muslimeen’ (Ghandi and the issues of Arabs and Muslims) by Bahraini scholar Abdulnabi AlShoala, published by Arab Scientific Publishers (2018) 6. ‘Al Tadawi Bel Falsafa’ (Philosophical Therapeutics) by Moroccan scholar Said Nachid, published by Dar Al Tanweer Printing & Publishing (2018) The Award’s longlist in other categories will be announced within the coming few weeks. The Sheikh Zayed Book award is an independent cultural award administered by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, with a total monetary value of AED 7 million.

The foundation of the Award was laid out in memory of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his pioneering role in national unity and the country’s development. It is presented every year to outstanding writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talents whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life.

The Award aims to 1. Honour intellectuals, researchers, and writers, who have made significant contributions in literature, social sciences and the culture and knowledge of the modern age.

2. Honour prominent figures who have made outstanding achievements at a regional and international level, and informing readers about them in the context of creativity and innovative thought.

3. Appreciate the immense cultural role of translators who enrich culture, promote dialogue between civilizations, and bring nations together.

4. Encourage creativity of youth, and motivate them to research, and create a spirit of positive competition in this vital sector that represents the nation's present and future.

5. Honour institutions, research centres, Arab and international publishing houses that represent an inventive cultural project that caters for creativity, and promote the human values of dialogue and tolerance.

6. Encourage children and adolescents’ literature, which seeks to develop this important segment of society, and their aesthetic taste, and constructs their cultural identity on the foundation of creative interaction between the past and present.
