Guterres Monitors 'With Concern' Tijuana Crisis Caused By Migrant Caravan - Spokesman

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st November, 2018) UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is closely following the situation in Tijuana, Mexico, as members of the Central American migrant caravan settled in the area causing a humanitarian crisis, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

"The Secretary-General is following the evolving humanitarian situation in Tijuana in northern Mexico with concern," Dujarric told reporters.

Dujarric said the UN chief recognizes the efforts of the Mexican government to give migrants access to the asylum system.

The United Nations has encouraged the people in the migrant caravan to partner with local authorities and pay attention to legal information provided to them while the international body's representatives on the ground may be reached for technical advice, Dujarric added.

On Sunday, protests against immigrants erupted in Tijuana with hundreds of people demanding an end to what they called is an invasion of migrants and proclaimed the slogan "Mexico First."

The caravan stopped at Tijuana because it is located on the US-Mexico border, next to the US city of San Diego, where migrants could enter the United States and apply for asylum.
