"Another cowardly act against our police. A policeman was wounded in an attack near the commissariat. The employee is in the hospital, but his life is not in danger. All our support for the Brussels police," Jambon wrote on Twitter.
Another police officer used his weapon against the attacker, wounding him in the chest. The assailant was hospitalized.
The prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the case.
In turn, spokeswoman for Brussels police Ilse van de Keere told Sputnik that all motives behind the attack were being looked into.
"The prosecutor's office is investigating the case. At the moment, all versions are being considered, and it is premature to make any conclusions at this stage ... The police officer was hospitalized, and according to the latest data, his life is not in danger," she said.
In addition, Jambon reportedly said citing preliminary data that the attacker was recently released from prison, but was not on the list of persons associated with terrorism.
