MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th November, 2018) Reports on the potential return of Russian military bases to Cuba are "soft science fiction," the head of the Department of Latin America at the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Monday.
The Daily Star newspaper reported Saturday, citing US-based think tank The Jamestown Foundation, that Russia might establish new bases in Cuba.
"We do not comment on soft science fiction," Aleksander Shchetinin said, when asked about the article.
According to the think tank, the rumors of a possible reopening of Lourdes signals intelligence facility in Cuba and setting up new Russian bases started after a visit of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel to Russia and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
