One Person Dies in Southeast France Amid Protests Against Rising Fuel Prices - Reports

One person was knocked down and killed in the southeastern French Isere department amid protests against fuel price hikes, local media reported on Saturday.

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th November, 2018) One person was knocked down and killed in the southeastern French Isere department amid protests against fuel price hikes, local media reported on Saturday.

According to BFMTV, the accident occurred in Isere's Pont-de-Beauvoisin commune. A female driver panicked as the traffic was blocked by scores of protesters, and bumped into the crowd, fatally injuring a woman, aged around 50 years. The driver was detained.

Scores of people wearing high-visibility yellow waistcoats blocked streets across France on Saturday. According to French daily newspaper 20 minutes, in early morning, the protesters who gathered near the French Ministry for the Economy and Finance, located in the country's capital, were calling on the drivers passing by to join them. They then proceeded to the Place de la Bastille square.

Protesters across the country erected tire barricades or just walked slowly in big groups, while taxi drivers also impeded traffic.

Throughout the day, around 1,500 protests are expected to be held, while only around 100 of these have been approved by the government.

The price of diesel has risen by around 23 percent over the past 12 months, to the average of 1.51 Euros ($1.72) per liter.
