UK Police Need More Funding to Curb Rising Number of Violent Attacks - Home Secretary

The UK police need more funding to cope with knife crime that has spiked significantly in recent years, UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid said Thursday, stressing that Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond seemed to be committed to making sure the police had the necessary financial resources.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th November, 2018) The UK police need more funding to cope with knife crime that has spiked significantly in recent years, UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid said Thursday, stressing that Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond seemed to be committed to making sure the police had the necessary financial resources.

"I think resources is part of the issue, making sure that police as they deal with more of these complex situations that they have the resource they need. That is why I welcome the commitment by the chancellor just a week ago to sit down with me and discuss what resource is needed for the police and we have the December settlement just a few weeks away so this is something that can be looked at very, very quickly," Javid told the Sky News broadcaster.

Javid added that he had discussed the issue of additional funding amid the growing number of stabbing nationwide attacks with Hammond. According to Javid, the chancellor hinted that additional money could be allocated before the end of the year.

The news comes in the wake of five fatal knife attacks in London that took place over the past seven days. According to reports, knife crime has surged by 16 percent in London within the 12 months ending in March 2018. At least 119 people have been killed in violent stabbings in London so far this year, according to The Guardian newspaper.
