MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th November, 2018) Afghan security forces supported by foreign troops killed 16 Taliban militants in the country's northeastern province of Baghlan during a joint operation, media reported on Thursday.

The TOLO news broadcaster reported, citing Baghlan police chief Akramuddin Sare, that the counterterrorism operation lasted for four days and involved air and ground forces.

At least 19 Taliban were wounded in the operation, and several local villages were cleared of militants, the broadcaster said.

Earlier in the day, media reported that at least 14 Afghan servicemen were killed and seven others were wounded as a result of an attack by Taliban insurgents in Baghlan's neighboring province of Takhar.

Local police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Rashid Basheer told the Pajhwok news agency that militants had stormed a local military camp late on Wednesday. About 55 servicemen were stationed in the camp.

About 20 militants were injured after additional troops arrived in the area to repel the attack, the publication said.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from an unstable political, social and security situation due to simmering Taliban insurgency. The violence is exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups, including the Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia).
