More Than 20 Nations Halt Iran Oil Imports to Prepare for US Sanctions - State Department

More than 20 countries have stopped importing oil from Iran during the past six months in preparation for Monday's re-imposition of US sanctions, US Department of State Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook told reporters on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th November, 2018) More than 20 countries have stopped importing oil from Iran during the past six months in preparation for Monday's re-imposition of US sanctions, US Department of State Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook told reporters on Monday.

"We have had more than 20 countries that imported Iranian oil prior to May have now zeroed out their imports because of our sanctions," Hook said.

In May, President Donald Trump announced withdrawing the United States from the Iran nuclear agreement and said a six month "wind down period" would be instituted to give nations, companies, organizations and people time to prepare for the full re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran that had been lifted during the Obama administration.

Hook explained that Iran had lost "tens of billions of Dollars" in planned international investments during the past six months, due to decisions by more than 100 major companies to sever commercial ties with Tehran.

An initial round of sanctions took effect in August, and the second, more severe wave on Monday hit more than 700 Iranian entities and individuals, according to the State Department.
