Poroshenko Says Turkey Not to Stay Silent Over Situation in Azov Sea

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Saturday that Turkey would not remain indifferent to the settlement of the situation in the Azov Sea.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th November, 2018) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Saturday that Turkey would not remain indifferent to the settlement of the situation in the Azov Sea.

Poroshenko and a number of senior Ukrainian officials are currently on a two-day visit to Turkey.

"Turkey's assurance that it will not remain indifferent to the issue of Russia's 'creeping aggression' in the Sea of Azov is important to us, we have also agreed to coordinate our actions on the issue of violation of human rights in Crimea," Poroshenko said at a press conference after a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aired by the Ukrainian tv channels.

The sides also reaffirmed their intention to work together to resolve these issues, "including within international organizations, in particular the United Nations," the Ukrainian president added.

Tensions in the Sea of Azov rose earlier this year after Ukraine detained two Russian ships for sailing in Crimean waters. Russia described Kiev's move as "maritime terrorism" and ramped up patrols off its Azov coast, leading to Kiev accusing Moscow of illegal inspection of vessels from Ukraine.

The Crimean border protection department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has said that inspections were conducted in accordance with international law of the sea.
