Palestinian Groups Deny Reports About Agreement on Temporary Gaza Ceasefire

Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad refuted on Thursday reports about agreeing to temporary ceasefire in Gaza Strip, promising to continue protests until the end of Israel's blockade on the enclave.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad refuted on Thursday reports about agreeing to temporary ceasefire in Gaza Strip, promising to continue protests until the end of Israel's blockade on the enclave.

Earlier in the day, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the two groups had committed to halting violent activity, such as launches of airborne firebombs or burning tires during the demonstrations, in an attempt to reduce friction in light of the talks brokered by Egypt.

"The leaderships of the two movements affirmed the following positions: Continuing the March of Return and breaking the siege until it achieves its goals ... and preserving its peacefulness," the two groups said in a jointly-issued statement, as quoted by i24NEWS portal.

The long-standing tensions between Israel and Palestine escalated in late March, when Palestinians launched weekly protest rallies, the Great March of Return, at the Gaza border. Egypt has been working together with the United Nations to ease tensions between the two sides.
