Mexico Ready To Continue Taking In Migrants Respecting Law - Interior Minister

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) Mexico is ready to continue accepting migrants from Central America if they act peacefully and in accordance with the law, Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete said.

"We do not mind if migrants [from Central America] arrive in our country. But we ask them to follow one condition which is to act peacefully and address administrative authorities for the settlement of their situation," Navarette told a press conference on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the authorities have reported about several cases of detention of members of the migrant caravan, which has been moving from Central America to the United States through the Mexican territory since late October.

Mexican authorities have said that the caravan marching through its territory included around 3,600 migrants, while around 1,750 people have applied for receiving asylum in Mexico.

While US President Donald Trump characterized the situation as a national emergency and deployed thousands of troops to the Mexican border, accusing Mexico City of failure to contain the approaching migrant caravan, the Mexican authorities announced a migrant support program.

The plan envisages providing Central American migrants who settle their legal status in Mexico with access to temporary employment programs, medical care and schools for children.
