Russian Seismologists Register Magnitude 4.1 Earthquake Off Southern Kuril Islands

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) SAKHALINSK, November 1 (Sputnik) - A magnitude-4.1 quake was registered on Thursday near the southern Kuril islands, the Sakhalin Region branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian academy of Sciences (GS RAS) told Sputnik.

"A 4.1-magnitude earthquake was registered on Thursday at 06:03 a.m. [19:00 GMT on Wednesday] in the Pacific Ocean near southern Kurils. The epicenter was located ... 121 kilometers [75 miles] to the east of the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk [on the Kunashir island]. The hypocenter was registered at the depth of 62 kilometers," a seismologist on duty at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk center said.

Tremors of up to three points on the Richter magnitude scale were felt on the neighboring Shikotan island, according to the seismologist.
