MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) Caracas has suggested that its strategic cooperation with Moscow should be increased, Venezuelan Economy Vice President Tareck El Aissami said.

"We have proposed to step up bilateral and strategic cooperation between Venezuela and Russia for the well-being of our peoples and our sovereignty. I thank comrade Yury Borisov, the [Russian] deputy prime minister, for his attention and solidarity," El Aissami wrote on Twitter after his meeting with Borisov at the ongoing Havana International Fair on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a Russian delegation, led by Deputy Finance Minister Sergey Storchak, is visiting Caracas. Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian officials held a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during which they discussed ways to boost the South American country's economic independence.

According to the local VTV broadcaster, the Venezuelan president covered nine areas of strategic cooperation during his talks with the Russian mission.

Russia has been supporting Venezuela's sovereignty and maintaining that the country should develop without external interference. Officials from both countries have been holding bilateral meetings on various levels to strengthen their ties.

In late September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Maduro on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The two high-ranked officials discussed Russian-Venezuelan relations, interaction within the United Nations and other international organizations, as well as the developments in Venezuela and the Latin American region.
