"We are aware of the announcement, and this is an internal matter," Sanders said. "We are going to continue to work with the Chancellor and continue to develop that relationship."
Merkel announced on Monday that she would not run for re-election as the CDU leader in December and would step down as Federal chancellor in 2021. The announcement followed dramatic losses by the CDU and its Bavarian sister party SPD in two state elections.
The Social Democratic Party, Merkel's coalition partners, suffered significant losses in both state elections in October, prompting a threat from its leader, Andrea Nahles, to quit the federal government. The Green party emerged as the biggest winner, followed by the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is now represented in all regional parliaments.
