Lawyers For Detained US Citizen in Iraq Unable to Confirm Release After Year in Jail

Reports that a US citizen imprisoned in Iraq and known only as John Doe has been released cannot be confirmed by lawyers who have represented the prisoner during his year in jail, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th October, 2018) Reports that a US citizen imprisoned in Iraq and known only as John Doe has been released cannot be confirmed by lawyers who have represented the prisoner during his year in jail, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a press release on Monday.

The ACLU has represented Doe in a legal challenge to his unlawful detention by the US military, which has imprisoned him in Iraq since September 2017, the release explained.

"The ACLU cannot at this time confirm or deny the information reported in the [New York] Times due to the confidential nature of settlement discussions," the release said. The Times reported on Monday that Doe had been set free.

The ACLU has worked to secure Doe's release or get him his day in court since October 2017, and recently engaged in weeks of negotiations with the government, the release noted.

The negotiations began after the ACLU filed an emergency request in June to block the government's plan to "release" Doe in war-torn Syria, where his life would be in danger, the release explained.
