Russian National Lisov Accused Of Cybercrime In US May Get Life Sentence - Lawyer

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Russian programmer Stanislav Lisov, who has been extradited from Spain to the United States on cybercrime charges, may face life sentence there, Lisov's lawyer said in an interview released on Friday.

"Stanislav may receive the verdict that will exceed his life expectancy in jail. I mean, this is practically a life sentence, though such crimes are not usually punished with more than 25 years in jail. But this is a lot, too, as you can see. That is why we are now waiting for an offer from prosecutors on the possibility for Stanislav to receive a relatively short term if he pleads guilty," Arkadiy Bukh said in an interview with the Russian Izvestiya newspaper.

The lawyer noted that Lisov did not admit his guilt, thus he was waiting for a jury trial, which may be held in 2019 or even in 2020.

Bukh added that the conditions in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York where Lisov was detained were "normal" in comparison with other US prisons.

Lisov was detained in Barcelona in early 2017. A year later, he was extradited from Spain to the United States. The US authorities claim Lisov had developed malware that allowed him to steal $855,000 and had attempted to carry out illegal financial operations with around $4.4 million. The Russian national is also accused of illegally accessing financial institutions data after which he allegedly sold the information on the black market.
