Republicans Leading in Senate Races in States of Texas, Nevada Ahead of Midterms - Poll

Republican candidates for the US Senate are holding the lead in the key states of Texas and Nevada nearly two weeks before the 2018 midterm elections, a new Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics poll revealed on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th October, 2018) Republican candidates for the US Senate are holding the lead in the key states of Texas and Nevada nearly two weeks before the 2018 midterm elections, a new Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for politics poll revealed on Wednesday.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz is ahead of his Democratic rival Beto O'Rourke by solid five points with 49 percent of voters supporting him in Texas where President Donald Trump campaigned this week, according to the poll.

Trump endorsed Cruz in the Senate race despite the fact the two had a rocky relationship during the 2016 presidential campaign. Then-candidate Trump accused Cruz of misleading US voters and gave him a nickname "Lying Ted." But Trump changed his tone and now fully supports Cruz calling him "Beautiful Ted" and "Texas Ted," saying Cruz has done a lot for his state and helped the government deal with a number of key issues.

In Nevada, Republican Senator Dean Heller is ahead of his Democratic challenger Jacky Rosen by 47 percent to 41 percent, the poll said. Heller's lead has grown by three percentage points in the last month, according to the poll.

Democrats have better chances for electoral victory in the state of Wisconsin, where the majority of voters, or 54 percent, back Senator Tammy Baldwin versus her challenger Leah Vukmir, who has 39 percent support, according to the poll.

The midterm election to the US Congress is scheduled to be held on November 6. US voters will elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and about a third of the total number of US senators.
