NATO Opposes New Arms Race, But Calls for Response to Alleged INF Breaches - Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that the alliance did not want a new arms race, but it was important to address Russia's alleged violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th October, 2018) NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that the alliance did not want a new arms race, but it was important to address Russia's alleged violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Washington announced last week that it was going to leave the treaty over suspected violations of the Russian side.

"We don't want a new cold war, we don't want a new arms race. So, therefore we strongly believe that it is important to address concerns we have expressed for a long time regarding the new missile. And Russia has to come into compliance with the INF treaty in a transparent and verifiable way," the NATO chief said.

The allies will meet at the ambassador level later this week as part of the months-long consultations on the INF, Stoltenberg added.
