Death Toll From Kabul Blasts Rises to 44 Amid Elections - Reports

Deaths in blasts across Kabul have risen to 44 as Afghans went to the polls on Saturday to elect the lower house of parliament, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th October, 2018) Deaths in blasts across Kabul have risen to 44 as Afghans went to the polls on Saturday to elect the lower house of parliament, local media reported.

The explosions also wounded 238 people, the Pajhwok news agency reported after an Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman told Sputnik at least three bombs went off near polling stations.

Interior Minister Wais Barmak was quoted by the Tolo News channel as saying at least 10 police officers, a soldier and 17 civilians had been killed. A total of 192 "armed incidents" were reported, he added.

Voting began on Saturday morning across most of Afghanistan. Many polling centers opened late after having waited for hours for voter lists to arrive, with long lines forming outside. Voters defied threats of violence by the Taliban, which does not recognize the elections.
