"We still have serious issues and challenges between us, we're at a moment today too, but I'm confident our ability to tackle these issues together will lead us toward the right path," Pompeo told reporters.
Pompeo praised Mexico's cooperation in crafting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
At the moment, however, the United States and Mexico share the challenge of how to deter the Honduran caravan of about 4,000 immigrants making their way to Mexico in order to continue to the United States to seek asylum.
Mexico has allocated personnel and resources to its southern border to confront the caravan at the Mexico-Guatemalan border. Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray said that their focus will be respecting migrants' human rights and ensuring their safety, especially the safety of children.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump threatened to mobilize the US military and close the country's southern border if the Mexican government failed to prevent the flow of migrants from Central and South American countries.
