Cyprus Leaders to Meet on October 26 - UN Peacekeeping Mission

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will hold a UN-facilitated meeting on October 26, UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) said in a statement.

ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th October, 2018) Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will hold a UN-facilitated meeting on October 26, UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) said in a statement.

Anastasiades and Akinci last met on April 16. This was their first meeting after talks on Cyprus settlement failed in July 2017.

"Deputy Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, will host a meeting of the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akıncı, at the Chief of Mission Residence in the UN Protected Area on 26 October at 10:00 hrs [07:00 GMT]," the statement read.

The island of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied its northern part. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was proclaimed in 1983, but it is recognized as an independent state solely by Turkey, while the global community regards it as a part of the Republic of Cyprus. Numerous rounds of talks have been held, with the United Nations and the European Union promoting the negotiations, but no result has been reached.
