German Foreign Minister Says Postpones Visit to Saudi Arabia Amid Khashoggi's Vanishing

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Wednesday that he had decided to postpone his trip to Saudi Arabia amid the situation around the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th October, 2018) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Wednesday that he had decided to postpone his trip to Saudi Arabia amid the situation around the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"As for the plans for my visit, we did envisage it in the framework of our dialogue with Saudi Arabia. Now we will wait again," Maas said, adding that Berlin intended to wait for Riyadh's statement regarding Khashoggi.

Maas noted that the decision whether "a trip to Saudi Arabia makes sense to us at the moment or rather not" would depend on Riyadh's response.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, went missing on October 2. He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where he went to receive papers he needed to remarry.

Turkey has expressed concerns that Khashoggi could have been murdered inside the building, while the Saudi government has denied involvement in the case, claiming that the journalist disappeared after he left the consulate.
