Turkish Foreign Minister Says Plans to Discuss Khashoggi Vanishing With Pompeo

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that he plans to discuss with US State Secretary Mike Pompeo the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Consulate General of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul.

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that he plans to discuss with US State Secretary Mike Pompeo the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Consulate General of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul.

"Pompeo will visit Ankara after Riyadh. We are pleased with this visit. What they [the Saudi authorities] do not tell us, Pompeo will tell us after his talks in Riyadh," Cavusoglu told reporters.

As Turkish police officers are currently searching the Saudi consulate, the foreign minister noted that the authorities might also interrogate the staff of the diplomatic mission.

"The prosecutor's office may request to testify those employees of the Consulate General of Saudi Arabia, which it deems necessary to interrogate. The investigation should be transparent. Everyone has a common goal: to clarify what happened to Khashoggi," Cavusoglu underlined.

Earlier in the day, Pompeo met with Saudi King Salman in Riyadh and thanked the latter for his country's commitment to investigate the disappearance of Khashoggi, according to the State Department.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, went missing on October 2. He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where he went to receive papers he needed to remarry. The Saudi government has refuted allegations that Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate.
