Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU), the sister party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, is leading in the regional parliamentary election with 37.2 percent of votes, according to preliminary results published by the state electoral authority.

MUNICH (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th October, 2018) Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU), the sister party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, is leading in the regional parliamentary election with 37.2 percent of votes, according to preliminary results published by the state electoral authority.

Thus, CSU might get 85 out of the Landtag's 205 seats and lose its ultimate authority in the region as well as the ability to independently form a coalition.

CSU is trailed by the Greens with 17.5 percent (38 seats), the Free Voters party with 11.6 percent (27 seats), the far-rights anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 10.2 percent (22 seats), the Social Democratic Party of Germany with 9.7 percent (22 seats) and the Free Democratic Party 5.1 percent (11 seats).

Commenting on the election results, German political scientist Johannes Aigelsreiter told Sputnik that CSU might form a coalition with the Free Voters.

The turnout at Sunday's parliamentary election in Bavaria stood at 72.4 percent compared to 63.6 percent at 2013 election.
