UN Backs Chief Middle East Envoy's Work in Gaza Despite Palestine's Boycott - Spokesman

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to endorse the efforts of peace envoy to the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov amid reports of Palestine's non-cooperation with the official, Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said during a press briefing on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th October, 2018) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to endorse the efforts of peace envoy to the middle East Nickolay Mladenov amid reports of Palestine's non-cooperation with the official, Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said during a press briefing on Friday.

The Palestinian leadership on Thursday said they would no longer accept Mladenov because he allegedly tried to strike a deal between Israel and terror group Hamas.

"The UN Secretary-General fully supports the efforts of special coordinator Mladenov who has been working tirelessly with all concerned parties ... to change the dynamic in Gaza," Haq told reporters.

Mixed signals, he added, have been coming from different Palestinian officials regarding this case and the United Nations is not aware of any formal non-cooperation with Mladenov at this point.

The spokesman said a political breakthrough is critically needed in the Gaza Strip in order to restore the unity of Palestine and move towards a two-state solution to the conflict with Israel. He did not confirm Mladenov played any role in making a deal between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas seeks the creation of an independent state of Palestine and wants Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it occupied after the 1967 war. The movement governs the Gaza Strip independently of the Palestinian Authority.
