Wider Round Table On Ukrainian Crisis To Be Held In EU Parliament Soon - EU Lawmaker

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th October, 2018) Miroslavs Mitrofanovs, a member of the European Parliament from Latvia, who was among the organizers of a recent round table on the Ukrainian conflict at the EU Parliament, told Sputnik Wednesday that another discussion would be initiated in the near future and expressed his hope that it would be a larger event with increased participation of the Ukrainian side and of the eastern Ukrainian breakaway republics.

Earlier on Wednesday, a round table devoted to the crisis in eastern Ukraine was held with the participation of representatives of Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) at the European Parliament in Brussels. The discussions have been initiated by three members of the European Parliament and aimed to make the parties to the conflict overcome their differences and to approach the conflict resolution.

"We will will soon be able to announce more Names of members of the European Parliament to prepare another round table, wider this time, with more participation on the side of Ukraine and on the side of the separatist republics, around November 26, 2018, here in parliament. It is essential that the European Parliament does get more interested in the details of the application of an agreement," Mitrofanovs said.

He added that the first round table encouraged him to try to convince his colleagues at the European Parliament to take the new format of discussions seriously and to make the voice of the EU lawmakers heard "at the level of Minsk agreements."

The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev, which came to power after what they considered to be a coup.

In February 2015, the warring parties signed the Minsk peace accords to end the hostilities in the region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
