China in Midst of Unprecedented Influence Campaign in US - Homeland Security Secretary

China has launched an unprecedented campaign to influence the opinions of Americans but the country has not yet attacked US election systems, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said on Wednesday during testimony before a Senate Committee.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) China has launched an unprecedented campaign to influence the opinions of Americans but the country has not yet attacked US election systems, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said on Wednesday during testimony before a Senate Committee.

"China is absolutely on an unprecedented, they are exerting unprecedented effort to influence American opinion," Nielsen told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, but she emphasized that Beijing has not attempted to compromise US election infrastructure.

US President Donald Trump said during a United Nations Security Council meeting last month that China was meddling in the 2018 midterm elections.

Vice President Mike Pence echoed Trump's accusations during a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC on October 4, saying that China is trying to influence American public opinion in the 2018 and 2020 elections because, "Trump's leadership is working, and China wants a different American president."

Pence added that Beijing was also trying to influence business leaders in the United States due to the Trump administration's tough action on trade.
