Slovakia Wants to Remain Russian Gas Transit State After Nord Stream 2 Launch - Minister

Slovakia wants to maintain its status as an important transit state for the transport of Russian gas after the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak said on Tuesday after the talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th October, 2018) Slovakia wants to maintain its status as an important transit state for the transport of Russian gas after the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak said on Tuesday after the talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"It is very important for us that [after the Nord Stream 2 construction] Slovakia keeps its role as a transit state for the transit of Russian gas to Western Europe," Lajcak said at a press conference.

The minister pointed out that Slovakia had proved to be a reliable partner for gas transit.

The Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Russia's Gazprom with France's Engie, Austria's OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany's Uniper and Wintershall. It aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters (some 2 trillion cubic feet) of Russian natural gas a year to the European Union through the Baltic Sea bypassing Ukraine.

The pipeline project has been welcomed by some countries in Europe and opposed by a number of others, including Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States, while the United States has also expressed its opposition.
