President-Elect Reaffirms Mexico To Scrap Use Of Fracking In Oil Output

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th October, 2018) Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the technology of hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as fracking, would no longer be used in the country's oil output.

"I will say this in advance. We will not use the well-known method of fracking in oil and gas output. It will not be used neither in the San Luis Potosi state nor elsewhere in the country," Lopez Obrador said during his visit to the state where he met with the governor on Friday.

Lopez Obrador had a landslide victory in the July election.

In August, the president-elect promised to ban the use of hydraulic fracturing in oil output. This announcement was welcomed by various activist associations, seeking to end the use of fracking in North America.

Fracking allows for shale oil and gas to be extracted by injecting liquid infused with chemicals into the ground under high pressure. The critics believe this process damages the environment and threatens public health.
