Tunisian President Extends State of Emergency Until November

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi on Friday extended by a month the state of emergency, the presidential office said, pointing to the security situation in the North African country.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th October, 2018) Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi on Friday extended by a month the state of emergency, the presidential office said, pointing to the security situation in the North African country.

"The President ... decided to prolong a state of emergency across the Republic by one month, starting from October 8," the statement read.

The announcement was made after the president received the ministers of interior affairs and national defense at the Carthage Palace outside Tunis. They discussed security and the threat of terrorism.

The state of emergency in Tunisia was imposed in 2015 after a series of attacks across the country claimed scores of civilian lives. That year, militants killed 23 mostly European tourists in an assault on the Bardo museum in Tunis and 38 people at a resort north of Sousse.
